Pampering your Pooch

Your four-legged friends shouldn't be forgotten when it comes to beautifying! Their grooming routines should differ vastly from your own, so we asked the pros the best way to make them pretty.

1. Use a low-level pH shampoo, remeber dogs skin is as sensitive as a baby's. This means the shampoo you use on your hair may not be suitable for your fury friend.

2. Regular brushing will go part the way to helping keep the coat knot free and the skin free of diseases and parasites, such as fleas. The best thing to do is check with your vet or pet shop for a comb that suits your dog's coat, as there are lots to choose from.

3. Detangling conditioner isn't just for humans, most conditioners deodorise aswell as detangling.

4. Eyes and ears need special attention. Salt water is great for bathing staining around the eyes, as well as cleaning cuts and scratches. Also regular wipe your dogs ears with a cotton-wool square to help prevent ear infections.

5. Doggy nails require clippers designed especially for dogs. Ask a friend to help hold your furry mate. Only clip the tip of each nail, being careful to stop short of the quick where the blood vessels are. If you are a tad unsue leave it to the pros, or ask your vet to show you the correct technique the first time, especially if your dog has dark nails.

6. Sometimes fur around the eyes needs a trim. If you're going to DIY, make sure you use grooming scissors (they have rounded ends to help avoid accidents).

7. Prefer to send your companion to a groomer for pampering? Shop around for a groomer you can relate to, and check their set-up — do they cage dogs all day, or groom by appointment?
